Everyone has ever heard the term ‘morning wood’. Here’s why do guys get turned on in the morning, according to science.
Morning wood, morning erections… I’m sure you’ve all heard it or experienced it yourself if you ever stuck around long enough until the next morning – and if you’re a guy, then I’m sure you’ve had plenty in your life. But why do guys get turned on in the morning?
That’s the question, isn’t it? Is it because of what they dreamed about? Is it a health condition? Or is it just simply how men are made to be? Here are some answers for the curious.
Why do guys get turned on in the morning?
First of all, it’s important to know that a morning wood doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re horny. It is one of the reasons, but there are other factors that can cause that too. Such as bladder or REM sleep. Urologist Ryan Berglund explained that during REM sleep, a male’s parasympathetic nervous system is more active. And a full bladder could press against and stimulate the sacral nerve.
The sacral nerve is part of the parasympathetic nervous system that controls erections. It’s also responsible for things like digestion, getting rid of waste, and sexual arousal. It’s also active while you’re awake or asleep, which is why sometimes erections also happens during sleep.
Can morning wood cause erectile dysfunction?
According to Urologist Ryan Berglund, erectile dysfunctions are multifactorial, it can be both physical and psychological, so it’s difficult to pinpoint what exactly is causing it. But, morning erections can help tell if it’s physical or psychological.
However, there are always chances or risks. So if you’re experiencing or noticing symptoms of erectile dysfunction, you can go see a doctor or therapist trained to treat it.
It’s lasted for a while… should I be worried?
Morning wood or erections usually disappear a while after you wake up. But there is a condition where an erection lasts for more than four hours, it’s called Priapism. Priapism can result in permanent penile dysfunction. If you have similar symptoms, it would be wise to go check with your doctor.
We get the science, but why do guys get turned on in the morning?
Hm, well it seems like most of the time, when a guy gets morning wood all he wants is sex, even though the cause of it may not be horniness.
Let’s put it this way; guys (though not limited to) generally love sex. So imagine you’re both in bed with either no clothes or minimal clothing, he just woke up and his little buddy down there is ready to get some action.
